Hello people of the Internet! (Hopefully some people are reading this) :)
Today, for my first review, I felt I would review the new Hobbit movie because it is one I have recently seen in the cinema, with a group of friends that made it a fun memorable experience. In the past, I have not been a particularly large LOTR and Hobbit fanatic but I have to say, this movie was captivating! Amazing! Utterly awesome!
The fact the movies have recently come out, is something that has influenced me to hold off on reading the books, as not to fall to the dreaded "wasn't as good as the book" mentality. This has given me a chance to enjoy the movies fully and I have not been disappointed. All the special effects were well implemented and I enjoyed each small part of the storyline. More importantly, I feel the establishing shots were well edited to fully immerse me, and the rest of the audience, into Tolkien's interestingly imagined world.
The storyline itself was fast paced, with many point of view shots and angles to throw the audience, feet first, into an action-packed sequence of events. I was able to fully empathize with our main protagonist, the beloved Bilbo, and the plights he had to face, from travelling in the latest automobile inventions ( a wooden barrel) to fighting giant spiders that left some people hiding away from the screen (will remain nameless to retain their pride) ;)
They way the characters have been created into these smaller creatures of hobbits and dwarves, in my opinion, is cinema trickery at some of its best. It is ingenious that forced perspective, with the actors sometimes just kneeling down, or designing sets to two different scales, has meant we truly see these "vertically challenged" races as they are meant to be seen.
This movie was never going to disappoint, with such a talented cast such as Martin Freeman (Bilbo), Richard Armitage (Thorin), Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and many more including Orlando Bloom as Legolas and even the mighty Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) as the fearsome Smaug. The audience had no doubt they would be entertained! It was just a question, how much?
For these reasons, and the fact I have been singing "I see Fire" ( sung by Ed Sheehan working with Howard Shore on the soundtrack ) for the last few weeks non-stop, I give the movie:

If you have not seen this movie, it is a must-see. If you are not totally into this genre, give it a chance, you will hopefully find one thing that gives you a smile! :)
